Meta to spend tens of millions on a pro-AI super PAC, a move that underscores the company’s growing influence in shaping California’s approach to artificial intelligence regulation. According to Politico, Meta is preparing to launch a political action committee called Mobilizing Economic Transformation Across California, designed to back candidates who favor minimal restrictions on AI development.

This announcement comes amid a broader push by Silicon Valley giants to protect AI innovation. Andreessen Horowitz and OpenAI’s Greg Brockman have already pledged $100 million for a separate pro-AI super PAC, signaling an industry-wide effort to steer regulation away from policies that could hinder growth.

Brian Rice, Meta’s Vice President of Public Policy and head of the new PAC, has voiced concerns that California’s regulatory environment could “stifle innovation, block AI progress, and put the state’s technology leadership at risk.” Earlier this year, Meta lobbied against state Sen. Scott Wiener’s SB-53 bill, which would have required AI firms to disclose safety protocols and report incidents. The company also played a key role in blocking the Kids Online Safety Act in 2023, which was widely expected to pass.

Beyond lobbying, Meta has contributed to down-ballot candidates from both parties, but this new super PAC signals a more ambitious strategy. With tens of millions in funding, Meta aims to influence statewide elections, including California’s 2026 governor’s race.

By launching this pro-AI super PAC, Meta is positioning itself at the center of the debate over AI regulation, reflecting its commitment to shaping policies that support innovation and maintain California’s dominance as a global technology hub.
